Sculpting Mark Twain

As we said, we want to show the process of creating a life-size sculpture. After creating the maquette, an armature is created and welded together. It will serve as a skeleton for support. My assistant , Dan, now ads foam to build up bulk that the clay will be applied to. Here is what he just finished today.

Just found your blog; although I’ve admired your sculptures for many years! THis is really interesting. Does the foam go into the kiln as well? I know that potters of dishes, plates, etc. worry about pieces coming out in one piece — do you have that concern? Or perhaps I’m not understanding the process…

Thanks for your comment and visiting the blog! If you visit the “Studio” section of the website we show and tell how a sculpture is created.
